What is AI Singularity?

AI singularity is the concept or hypothetical scenario where Artificial intelligence (AI) will be better than humans in terms of learning, training, decision making, accuracy and obviously the power. If AI singularity will be achieved then AI agent( e.g., Robot) can create AI agent, without human interaction.

For example, you own a software development company which uses highly advanced AI system to automate tasks. The AI system is able automate tasks such as it can write and debug code, it can test it, and can also deploy the software with least human interaction.

You got the project where your client asks “Build an AI assistant that can manage my calendar, book meetings, and send reminders by email”.

Then your company’s AI system starts planning the project as:

  • It should have natural language understanding.
  • It should have an integration with Google Calendar.
  • It should have email API setup.
  • It should have reminder logic.

Than instead of write just the code it, It decides to build separate AI agent with its own decision making capabilities which includes:

  • A trained language model to understand user input.
  • Rules to schedule/reschedule meetings.
  • Functions to email reminders or updates.

Than the AI system will start building the AI agent as:

  • It selects the relevant training data.
  • Fine tune the models.
  • It will test the model’s response.
  • Corrects the errors if any.
  • Build and deploy it.

Once the calendar Bot is created than it can work independently. It will continue to learn from user interactions, and suggests the improvements to company’s AI system.

For example, “Users often ask for weekly summaries—should I add this feature?”

The AI system can then create an update or can build another mini AI agent that can handle the Calendar Bot summaries.

In this Example you have clearly seen that if we let the AI system to take the decision by its own than it can continuously create a lot of AI agents without human permission. If this loop continues than it called AI singularity.

The term was popularized by the mathematician Vernor Vinge and futurist Ray Kurzweil, who predicted that the singularity could occur by 2045. At this point, machines could outthink humans in every domain, from science and art to problem-solving and creativity.

History of AI singularity

Alan Turing, also known as father of modern computer science introduced important foundation in modern communication which leads to AI singularity. In 1950, on his article Computing Machinery and Intelligence, he had given the idea of machine adapting intelligent behavior which is equals to or may be greater than human intelligence. He said, if the machine is so accurate that the human can not realize that he is talking to machines then the machines will be called as ” Intelligent “. This concept by Alan Turing inspired huge research in AI capabilities, which may potentially lead us close to singularity.

Later on in 1958 Stanislaw Ulam a mathematician, reported an earlier discussion on the computing technologies that then uncover the concept of technological singularity. Although he was not directly linked with AI, his major niche was cellular automata and iterative systems which provides insights to the complex self improving systems based on singularity theory. His collaboration with John von Neumann on cellular automata, made discrete abstract computational systems capable of simulating various complex behaviors.

Later on in 1983 , the concept of “Singularity” was again boasted by Vernor Vinge. Vernor Vinge wrote that he would be surprised if it occurred before 2005 or after 2030.

Later on  Ray Kurzweil in 2005 wrote on his book The Singularity Is Near, predicting singularity by 2045. He describes his Law of Accelerating Returns, which predicts an exponential increase in technologies like computersgeneticsnanotechnologyrobotics and artificial intelligence. Once the singularity has been reached at its peak, the machine intelligence will be infinitely more powerful than all human intelligence combined. The technological singularity is also the point at which machine intelligence and humans intelligence would merge. He also predicts the time: “I set the date for the Singularity—representing a profound and disruptive transformation in human capability—as 2045”.

Roman Yampolskiy has highlighted potential risks associated with the singularity, particularly the difficulty in controlling or predicting the actions of super intelligent artificial intelligence. These machines might not only operate at speeds that outcome human capabilities but could also engage in decision-making that does not align with human values or safety.

How Close Are We To The Technological Singularity?

If we have a deeper look at what we have now we can predict that when will technological singularity will happen. The current state of AI is that tools like ChatGPT or DeepMind’s AlphaFold are still narrow intelligences. They are brilliant at some tasks as we can see. Roman Yampolskiy wrote in “The Singularity May Be Near” that :

“While physical and theoretical limits to intelligence definitely exist they may be far beyond our
capacity to get to them in practice and so will have no impact on our perception of machine
intelligence appearing to be undergoing intelligence explosion. It is also possible that physical
constants are not permanently set, but dynamically changing which has been demonstrated for
some such physical “constants”. It is also possible that the speed of improvement in intelligence will be below the speed with which some such constants will change.

To bring an example from another domain, our universe can be said to be expending faster than the speed of light, with respect to distance between some selected regions, so even with travel at maximum theoretical speed of light, we will never hit a limit/edge. So, again this is another open questions and limit may or may not be encountered in the process of self-improvement caution that predicting the exact timeline is extremely difficult due to the unprecedented nature of the singularity itself. The developments leading to a singularity involve many variables, including breakthroughs in AI algorithms, hardware capabilities and societal factors that are hard to forecast with accuracy.”
